Afraid

In the month of October I will be linking up with other writers on Five Minute Friday for thirty-one days. Each day I will write about one word for five minutes. Here goes…

Two doe left the field for the woods as I was heading out of the driveway. Once under cover, they stopped and looked back at me. I had already rolled the window down and called out to them.

“Hello ladies,” I said.

Ears perked, big brown eyes started at me as I stared back. Afraid? No I think they were curious. As I stared back I wondered at the difference between earth now, and earth when Adam and Eve lived in the luxurious garden. They would have walked along with the deer, and who knows but the animals talked in Eden.

Suddenly I heard a new deer arriving; one I could not see, and the two the headed downhill towards the river. Gone…out of sight.

The deer are starting to move, as hunting season has begun. Afraid? When they are chased, when Man is too close. Yes, they are afraid.

Do we have the sense to move away from danger that comes into our lives?

  1. I love your writing style in the form of a short story! I talk to the Robins in my yard that way and call them Mr. Robin. I like pondering about whether the deer are afraid in the Garden of Eden and how they run from fear now and whether we do the same.
